According to the donor, the pieces of fabric used to make this quilt were cut from every bolt of gingham remaining in a New York City dry goods store at the time the store was sold (or closed) in the late nineteenth century. The store, located at Hudson and North Moore Streets, in New York City, was opened by Scott & Lawrie in 1817 and later owned by the donor's grandfather, Andrew Webster. The daybook of Scott & Lawrie, also donated by Mrs. Lewis, is preserved in the N-YHS Library.
