Financier Leonard Walter Jerome (1817-1891) was the maternal grandfather of Winston Churchill. He opened the Jerome Park Racetrack with the American Jockey Club on the Bathgate estate in Fordham September 25, 1866. The track popularized sprint races and staged annual stakes events, beginning with the Belmont Stakes in 1867. The track closed in 1889 to make way for a reservoir, temporarily re-opening in 1891 for the races of the Monmouth Park (New Jersey) Racing Association.
