Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) joined the army in 1806, and was eventually promoted to Major-General in 1846. He was nominated at the Whig convention in Philadelphia, 1848, over Henry Clay, Winfield Scott and Daniel Webster. The primary issue during his two-year administration as President was slavery.
