This wood fragment is from the stageof the Bowery Theatre, which opened in 1826 at the corner of Canal Street and the Bowery. In its early years it was in competition with the Park Theatre on Park Row and offered a similar repertory, but by the 1830s it specialized in the melodrama and spectacle sought after by the residents of its immigrant neighborhood. The theater burned in 1828, 1830, 1836, 1838, and 1845 and was rebuilt each time. It burned for the last time in 1929.
