This kerchief was made to celebrate the centennial of Washington's 1789 inauguration and the admittance, on November 11, 1889, of Washington as the 42nd state. The portrait of Washington on this kerchief is derived from a medal by Pierre Simon Benjamin Duviviar, which was commissioned by Congress and given to Washington in honor of the evacuation of the British troops from Boston. The Society has photographs of both the obverse and reverse of this medal.
