Waistcoat with cream silk front panels decorated all over with embroidered flower buds in pink, red and green thread; two ogee shaped pockets embroidered with a flower bud border in red, pink, yellow, green and tan and a floral garland in each center; border design is reapeated along the opening of the waistcoat and along the base; floral garlands embroidered below each pocket; thirteen buttons embroidered with flower buds; lining and back panel of cream linen.
Gift of Mrs. Samuel M. Stanton
This waistcoat belonged to Stephan Keys Stanton (1826-1914) who was Secretary of Legation in Paris under Richard Rush, U.S. Minister to France, 1847-1849, under the administration of President James K. Polk. He was a graduate of Columbia University, 1845. The donor is a daughter-in-law of S. K. Stanton.
