A note accompanying this fan indicates that it was sent to the donor's great-grandmother, Maria Cooper Pillow (b. 1762), from India by her son, Edward Pillow, Jr. Mrs. Pillow eventually passed the fan to her granddaughter, Eliza Pilcher (Mrs. John V. Cox), who passed it to the donor.
