The 73rd New York Volunteers, 2nd New York Fire Zouaves were a militia company that was formed from the New York volunteer fire department during the Civil War. Target companies in New York City were first formed by volunteer firemen in the 1830's who were devoted to target practice. When the War began, these companies did not enlist en masse, but contributed most of their men to the Fire Zouaves and other regiments. They were involved both with inciting and resolving the Draft Riots of 1863.
