Black painted cotton writing case with inner canister made of tin, inner flap with slots for pens and pencils, and attached blotting pad.

According to the accession records, this writing case was carried by the donors's father, George T. Leech (1847-1941), during his service in the Civil War. Leech first enlisted in Duryee's Zouaves in Baltimore, Maryland, claiming that he was sixteen years old, though he was only fourteen at the time. Leech served as a drummer until his father intervened and his military duties were terminated; he promptly reenlisted and remained active in a Maryland regiment until 1865.
