American, English and Continental women wore homemade muslin caps for informal everyday attire from the second quarter of the 18th through the 19th centuries. Children's apparel in the 18th and early 19th centuries mirrored adult fashion and therefore this bonnet was made in the likeness of women's bonnets of the period. This bonnet was worn by the father of Harriet Moore Francis of New York, and was given to her by her Aunt Mary Francis.
