Gold mourning ring; plain circular band with triple-molded exterior; inscription engraved along interior.
Gift of Miss Helen Burr Smith
engraved: on inside of ring: "C. Thurman Obt Mar 29th 1753 Agd 33 Years."
This gold ring was made as a funeral ring in memory of New Yorker Catherine Thurman (1720-1753), who died at age 33. The goldsmith and presumed maker of the ring, Nicholas Roosevelt (1715-1769), married Catherine's younger sister Elizabeth the following year. The ring descended in the Roosevelt family and was used as a wedding ring. The ring was resized and the goldsmith's hallmark was damaged.
