Description
Oval mourning brooch; glass compartment containing woven hair, overlaid with gold initials JBS; framed with 2 rings of black enamel and 1 ring of white enamel decorated with gold lozenges; gold beading around edge; inscription engraved on reverse; pin attachment.

Gallery Label
This mourning brooch commemorates John Bradstreet Schuyler (1765-1795). He was married to Elizabeth Van Rensselaer. His father, Major General Philip Schuyler, started a lumber business in Saratoga and upon John's death, he was able to leave a large estate there to his only son Philip (1788-1865).
