Description
Cast silver waste bowl in the Georgian melon pattern; round, squat body with chased lobes decorated with a foliate scroll design; on four cast legs attached to the body with trefoils dropping into paw feet; convex shoulder flared to a scalloped rim with applied cast gadrooning; engraved, "A T M" in script on the center front, and "November 10th 1897" in script on the base; makers' marks on base.

Mark: stamped along bottom around periphery four times incuse: "HOWARD & CO." /"NEW YORK" /"STERLING"/"1896"
Mark: stamped underside of center right foot also stamped with apttern number incuse "175", and front left foot stamped incuse "1 pt", which presumably relates to vessel quantity.

This waste bowl was a wedding gift to the donor's parents, Alice Townsend Martin, whose initials are engraved on the service, and Benjamin Brandreth McAlpin, on November 10, 1897.
