These buttons were excavated by the Field Exploration Committee in Ontario, Canada along the Niagara River near Fort George, a British fort built in 1795. They were worn by privates of the 41st Regiment on their gaiters, cloth or leather leggings that extended from the insteps of their shoes to their knees. The regiment arrived in Canada in 1799, was encamped near Fort George when war began in 1812, and took part in the unsuccessful British siege of Fort Erie in August and September of 1814.
