Dress sword with straight, double-edged steel blade which is elliptical in cross section; metal parts of hilt are of gilded brass with wooden(?) grip covered with wire wrapping; oval counter-guard on obverse side with molded oak leaf and acorn border and applied monogram, "USN"; oak leaf, acorn, and laurel leaf-molded knuckle-bow and quillon, the latter with scroll finial, separated by plain panel above center of counter-guard with applied eagle insignia; pommel in the form of a conventionalized helmet; leather scabbard with two gilded brass mounts, a wide band at throat with elongated frog stud and ornate, anthemion-like relief on obverse side, and tip with similar relief decoration on obverse and reverse and a very small symmetrical drag.
