Description
Rectangular gold mourning brooch with hinged inscription, pin and hook on reverse; obverse has beveled glass oculus with hair worked in a Turk's knot beneath, bordered with chased garland, surrounded by seed pearls, scalloped outer edge is beaded.

This mourning brooch commemorates John Derby (d. 1831) and his sister Martha Derby Prince (d. 1832), whose hair is in the oculus. John was the father of Sarah Ellen Derby (Mrs. John Rogers, 1805-1877), and grandfather of sculptor John Rogers.
