The subject, the second son of John McVickar (1759-1812) of County Antrim, Ireland, and Ann (Moore) McVickar, was born in New York. He received his A.B. from Columbia College in 1802, then studied at Peterhouse, Cambridge, England. He was an attorney with offices at 50 Wall Street. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his grandson and great-grandson.
