Description
Porcelain blue transfer-printed handleless cup and saucer decorated with a repeating pattern of stylized plants; at the center of the saucer and at the inside bottom of the cup are identical rondels with flowers and grass.

According to the donor, this cup and saucer were part of a service given by the government of Japan to Commander Oliver S. Glisson (1809-1890), who commanded the USS Powhattan under Admiral M.C. Perry in July 1853.
