Thomas Cole's painting, "View of the Catskill Mountain House, N.Y.," engraved and published in London in 1830, inspired this transfer-printed scene. Several Staffordshire potters reproduced engravings of the Catskill Mountain House, a popular resort overlooking the Hudson Valley. Such was its fame that James Fennimore Cooper advised his European audience in the 1850s: "If you want to see the sights of America, go to see Niagara Falls, Lake George, and the Catskill Mountain House"
