This ring may be the oldest heirloom to have descended in an American family line, and was passed from the eldest male child in each succeeding generation. It originally belonged to Kiliaen Van Rensselaer (1585/86-1643), the first patroon of Rensselaerwyck, New York, who gave it to his second wife Anna Van Weely in 1627. Almost three hundred years later, the donor, Kiliaen Van Rensselaer V, the fifteenth patroon, presented it to his wife, Dorothy Mason.
