Description 
Black wool felt shako with bell crown and black patent leather visor and trim; gilded metal front insignia with "7" in red enamel at center of circular medallion flanked by laurel branches and surmounted by a grenade; button with crossed cannon in relief and attached hooks from which metal scale chin strap with black leather backing is suspended; braided white cord draped in front and back; hole for pompon reinforced with metal grommet (pompon missing); black vinyl(?) half lining with lacing.

Gallery Label 
According to the accession records, this shako was worn by the donor during his service with the 7th Regiment, National Guard New York (1918-1931). His uniform coat, trousers, epaulets, and belt are also in the N-YHS Collection.
