Description
Wooden cog rattle with ratchet on turned handle and clapper mounted in turned, bulbous projection with incised bands.

According to the donor, this "rattle" belonged to James Wilson, who last served on the U.S. Frigate Vincennes as Sailing Master; Sailing Master was an early term for Chief Boatswain, highest non-commissioned officer in charge of the deck; the rattle was used for calling the crew together.
