"Chasseur pattern" blue wool forage cap; black patent leather visor which is rigid and somewhat rectangular; soft crown with circular, countersunk top; embroidered insignia with initials "NY" between leaf and berry branches stitched to front; chin strap secured at either side with a button embossed with a shield-breasted eagle bearing the letter "I" (for infantry).

According to the accession records, this cap was worn by the donor's father, Jacob Janeway Van Nest (1835-1875). A related coat and plume (1935.42a and 1935.42c) are also in the N-YHS Collection.
