Description
White leather breeches with bone and mother of pearl buttons; 4 button fly covered with a flap which fastens to 3 buttons across the top, 6 buttons around the waistband; legs open at the bottom with 5 buttons in a vertical row.

These breeches were worn by Chancellor Robert Livingston (1746-1813) of New York. Livingston served in the second Continental Congress, and was on the committee which drafted the Declaration of Independence. Among other positions, he served as Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and was instrumental in facilitating the Louisiana Purchase. He was also active in New York State politics.
