Description
Flat-folding black beaver (textile) chapeau bras with crest lined with black ostrich feathers; bands of ribbon extend diagonally from base on either side, framing on front a cockade consisting of a vertical, capsule-shaped "loop" with gilded metal shield-breasted eagle centered above a button with inscription, "ORDNANCE CORPS," in relief on circular belt superimposed on crossed cannon; gold bullion fringe at each corner; brown leather sweatband and rose silk lining; in shaped brown leather case lined with beige and brown printed textile.

Gallery Label
According to the accession records, this chapeau belonged to Colonel Julian McAllister (1823-1887), father of Mrs. Janeway. Colonel McAllister was a native of New York, a graduate of West Point, and a career officer in the U.S. Army. His epaulets and shoulder cords are also in the N-YHS Collection.
