Description
Flat-folding black beaver (textile) chapeau bras with two wide bands of black ribbon extending diagonally from lower edge on either side; black silk rosette with gold metallic cloth "loop" secured by gilded metal button with eagle insignia above the word "EXCELSIOR" in relief; brown and black ostrich feather plumes; gold bullion fringe at each corner.

According to the accession records, this chapeau was worn by the donors' father, Lt.-Colonel William Brewster Overton of the 2nd Division, National Guard New York, to the Brooklyn Bridge opening ceremonies on May 24, 1883.
