Description
Wheelthrown bulbous grey stoneware jug with modeled and incised mask of bearded man on bottle neck under banded border opposite handle and raised floral medallion impressions (3), under a caramel-colored salt glaze.

Bellamarines, greybeards, or bartmann krug as they are called in Germany where they were first made in the 16th century continued to be produced there until late in the 19th century. They were exported early on to England where it was believed that they represented Cardinal Bellarmino (1542-1621), a leader of the Counter- Reformation. They were sometimes called D'Alva bottles after the Spanish duke. D'Alva.
