On April 30, 1890, ground was broken for a permanent marble Washington Memorial Arch at the foot of Fifth Avene, New York City, to replace a temporary arch erected in 1889 to commemorate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration as first president of the United States. The stone arch, as well as its predecessor, was designed by Stanford White (1853-1906). In 1892 the last block of marble was set in place by William Rhinelander Stewart (1852-1929), the donor, who also initiated the work.
