The inscription, "An Appeal to Heaven," on this flag was taken from the closing paragraph of the address of the Provincial Congress of Massachussetts, after the battle of Lexington. The address ended, "...appealing to Heaven for the justice of our cause, we determine to die or be free." No original of this type survives, but it appears in many mezzotints and illustrations of the period.
