Gallery Label
This cup was presented to Thomas F. Grady at a banquet sponsored by the Tammany Society in 1898. The Tammany Society or Tammany Hall, as it was known, dominated New York politics during the late nineteenth century and produced notoriously corrupt politicians. Grady, a prominent Tammany orator known for his foul mouth, served as an assemblyman, senator and police justice during the 1880's and 90's. He made himself such an obstacle to good legislation that Grover Cleveland asked for his removal.
