Black beaver (silk) chapeau with folding crown and rigid corners; embroidered black binding on edges of cock and fan; triple loop of gold bullion (with twisted loop at center) over black silk rosette; gilded metal button (now detached) embossed with an eagle clutching an anchor inside a circle of stars; gold bullion fringe at each corner.
maker's label: inside top of crown: "Bent & Bush / WASHINGTON COR COURT ST. . . / Boston"
stamped: on back of button: "SCOVILL. / MFG. CO."
