Description
Black beaver (silk) chapeau with folding crown and rigid corners; embroidered black binding on edges of cock and fan; triple loop of gold bullion (with twisted loop at center) over black silk rosette; gilded metal button (now detached) embossed with an eagle clutching an anchor inside a circle of stars; gold bullion fringe at each corner.

According to Bazelon and McGuinn ("A Directory of American Military Goods, Dealers & Makers, 1785-1885," 1987), the firm of Bent & Bush was located in Boston at 273-275 Washington St., at the corner of Court, from 1849 to 1874.
