Description
Cast and wrought silver presentation salver; lobed, octagonal tray with raised, ogee sides and an applied band of ovals around the rim, with applied, cast shell and scroll motifs between and in the centers of the lobes; image of the yacht "Corsair" engraved at the top with the engraved inscriptions below, "CORSAIR DINING CLUB/ FORMED TO PROMOTE GOOD-FELLOWSHIP AND LOYAL FRIENDSHIP/ BY-LAWS ADOPTED NOVEMBER 2ND 1885/ J. PIERPONT MORGAN, PRESIDENT/ FRANK K. STURGIS SECRETARY & TREASURER/ MEMBERS/ J. Pierpont Morgan John King/ Charles Loinier Joseph H. Choate/ George L. Bowdoin William C. Whitney/ William Trumbull William Rockefeller/ David S. Egleston/ Goold H. Redmond/ Frank K. Sturgis Seth B. French/ Philip Schuyler Henry E. Howland/ Charles E. Strong Lewis Cass Ledyard/ William D. Mark: stamped in three locations incuse at periphery of reverse: "S.7563/ STERLING/" and with hallmark of 925 in bullet surround with circle and attached diamond marked with interior date 1913. Hallmarks associated with those used by Dominick and Haff. Hallmarks are also nearly identical to those on salver #1932.102
Gallery Label
This salver was presented to the donor by the executors of John Pierpoint Morgan's estate. Each member of the Corsair Club, a dining club that met on Morgan's yacht "Corsair," received silver mementos of the club at the time of Morgan's death in 1914.
