Wood, steel, and iron percussion carbine; part round, part octagon barrel with bladed front and long-range rear sight; iron furniture; stamped marks on barrel, breech, and breechblock.

Gallery Label
Nearly all of the Ballard carbines made by Ball & Williams were manufactured under Civil War military contrcts. The state of Kentucky bough nearly 4,000 carbines to arm its cavalry, and New York bought 500 carbines in September, 1863. According to accession records, this carbine was used during the war by John Madden of the 1st Cavalry, New York State Militia.
