Description
Dovetail wooden spectacles box with sliding removable lid, containing a variety of personal items; lid has adress label affixed to one side, vendor's information stamped on opposite side; personal items include 2 coin purses with metal snap fasteners, piece of red, white and blue silk ribbon tied in a knot at the center, metal letter "S", and an election roster printed on a piece of paper.

Gallery Label
This spectacles box containing personal items was among the items found in the footlocker of William H. Paine, who served as a surveyor with the Army engineers during the Civil War. Paine was responsible for devising systems and tools to better facilitate the surveyor's tasks, including patenting a coiled steel tape measure.
