Antoinette Polk was born in Nashville, Tennessee, the daughter of Colonel Andrew J. Polk of the Confederate Army and Rebecca (Van Leer) Polk who resided at Ashwood Hall. She married Baron Athanase de Charette de la Contrie (1832-1911) in Paris in 1877 and resided in France after her marriage.
