William J. Gaynor (1849-1913) served as mayor of New York City from 1909-1913. In August 1910, a discharged city employee attempted to assassinate the mayor on the deck of an ocean liner as he was about to embark for Europe. The bullet entered near his throat and was never extracted. During his recovery, the normally cantankerous mayor was said to show extreme patience and fortitude. This cup was presented to him by a committee of aldermen on the first anniversary of the assassination attempt.
