Virginia Gildersleeve, the daughter of Justice Henry Alger Gildersleeve of the Supreme Court of New York State, received her master's degree from Columbia University. She taught English at Barnard College, and served as dean of the college from 1911 to 1947. The bronze portrait based on this plaster model is at Barnard.
