Born in Dumfries, Scotland, Gracie came to America after the Revolution. He finally settled in New York and became very successful as a merchant and banker. The stately mansion that Gracie built for himself, his wife Ester (Rogers) Gracie, and their six children is today the official residence of the mayors of New York.
