The subject was the son of William McCoun and Sarah (Townsend) McCoun of Oyster Bay. He became a prominent attorney and judge, and was the first vice-chancellor of the New York court of chancery (1831-46); he then served as a justice of the supreme court for the second district. He was a patron of the arts and a friend of many artists, among them William Dunlap.
