Gallery Label
A native of Poland, the subject came to the U.S. at the age of twenty-two and became a civil engineer. He joined the Union army in 1861 and attained the rank of brigadier general. Following the war he held various government posts, the last of which was with the U.S. Customs House in New York. This portrait is based on a photograph by Gray in the Society's collection.
