Lawrence was a prosperous merchant and a charter member of the New York Stock Exchange. From 1809 to 1816 he served as an alderman of New York. Lawrence Park, in his study of the artist ("Gilbert Stuart," vol. 1, 1926, p. 465), said this portrait was painted in Boston and assigns the dates 1812-15 to it. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his granddaughter.
