Seidl, a native of Pest, Hungary, was named conductor at the Leipzig Opera in 1879, when he was not yet thirty. He was invited to come to New York as conductor of German opera at the Metropolitan Opera in 1885 and lived in New York the rest of his life. In 1891 he became conductor of the Philharmonic Society of New York, a position he held with distinction until his death.
