This painting was apparently purchased by Gerard Stuyvesant (1805-1859), grandfather of Augustus Van Horne Stuyvesant, Jr., from a dealer who identified the subject as Mrs. Peter Stuyvesant; this identification, however, has been rejected by scholars.
