The subject was a leading figure in the field of journalism in the middle of the 20th century. In 1917 he married Iphigene B. Ochs, the daughter of Adolph S. Ochs, then publisher of The New York Times. Sulzberger joined The Times in 1918 and when Ochs died in 1935 he assumed the leadership of what was by then one of the largest and most influential newspapers in the world. He served as president until 1957, and from 1957 until his death as chairman of the board.
