The subject, who was born in New York to parents of Irish descent, served in the state assembly and as sheriff of New York County and president of the New York Board of Aldermen before being elected governor of the state in 1918. In 1928, after four terms as governor, he ran unsuccessfully for president on the Democratic party ticket. Rittenberg painted this portrait at the commission of George A. Zabriskie, president of The New-York Historical Society.
