Tilghman, a distinguished jurist, was born in Talbot County, Maryland. He became chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 1806 and held that position until his death twenty-one years later. This portrait is one of several copies of an original by Rembrandt Peale. Thomas J. Bryan, the donor, acquired Jones's copy from the sale of the effects of the Peale Museum in 1854.
