The subject, the son of Jacob and Mary (Beekman) Walton, was born in New York and named after his uncle and his grandfather. He came from a family of wealthy merchants and shipbuilders and succeeded his uncle in the family enterprises. He added to the wealth and prestige of the family when he married the daughter of Lieutenant Governor James De Lancey, one of the foremost citizens of the colony. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his grandson.
