The subject was the son of Benjamin Woolsey, Jr., and Anne (Muirson) Woolsey; he was a descendant of George Woolsey who came to America about 1820. The subject was a merchant in New York, and an officer of the New York Chamber of Commerce and of the Manufacturing Society of New York City. He was also a director of the Merchants' Bank, president of the Eagle Fire Insurance Company, and one of the governors of the New York Hospital.
