Clevenger worked in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, taking the likenesses of the most eminent men of the day, and gaining a reputation as the most competent sculptor then working in America. This bust of Webster was one of several portraits Clevenger sent to the first sculpture exhibition of the Boston Athenaeum in 1839. Several replicas seem to have been produced in the next few years, one of which came to the Society, probably in the mid-19th century.
