The subject, a native of Albany, was the first child of Johannes and Margareta (Van der Poel) Van Zandt, who emigrated from Holland in 1681. According to family tradition the Society's portraits of Wynant and Catharine Van Zandt were originally full-length portraits, which at some point were cut down to their present size. Full-length portraits of the subjects were reportedly on exhibition at the Peale Museum at the time of the great fire in Philadelphia.
